Beaufort County's Composting Pilot Program has been awarded an Honorable Mention from the South Carolina Association of Counties’ (SCAC) J. Mitchell Graham Memorial Award for counties with over 150,000 in population. The recognition celebrates Beaufort County’s leadership in building a comprehensive program that diverts food waste from county landfills and educates our community on the benefits of composting.
The SCAC J. Mitchell Graham Memorial Award recognizes counties that address community challenges, implement operational improvements or enhance their citizens’ quality of life in a unique way. The award was named for past SCAC President and Charleston County Councilman J. Mitchell Graham, who served the Association from 1969 to 1970.
"We are so excited to bring this waste diversion initiative to Beaufort County. It has been a rewarding journey to develop the program and engage our residents," said Solid Waste & Recycling Program Manager, Victoria Hoffman. "We believe we've created a model for other counties to build on our success, and we are grateful that our residents care about what happens to our waste, where it goes, and what we can do together to protect and preserve the beautiful Lowcountry we call home."
